Postponing That Costly Computer Purchase

We all know the fear inspired by the so called “screen of death”. It signals the necessity of buying another computer. With even the most basic computers costing thousands of dollars these days, that prospect is enough to reduce some to tears and drive others to angry outbursts. But there are some steps you can take now to prolong the life of your current computer and thus postpone that dreaded purchase.

  • Avoid the frills

Brower add-ons, spyware, media players, additional software, and plug-ins may seem appealing, but they can really slow down your computer. Be selective in what you choose to download onto your computer and only keep the essentials.

  • Treat it well

This may seem like obvious advice, but many people needlessly shorten the lives of their computers through simple neglect. Never have food or drink close to your computer. Your morning latte is a death sentence for your laptop. Also, you should store your computer in a cool, dry place to prevent it from overheating or suffering moisture damage.

  • Store stuff elsewhere

To relieve some of the pressure on your computer’s memory, get an external hard-drive and store big files that you don’t need very often on there. Movies, photos, music, and other large files are all best kept on an external hard-drive.

  • Invest in anti-virus

Don’t even think about getting online unless you have a solid anti-virus program on your computer. This will protect it from viruses which could corrupt files and destroy your computer.

Maintaining your investment through proper computer care will ensure you get the most bang for your buck.
